OUT NOW ON YOUTUBE & TV
New music video video I produced, directed, filmed and edited for a young rock n’ roll band from Slovenia, Joker Out.
For quite some time I was thinking about a special music video project inspired by films such as Interstellar, The Arrival, The Martian, Star Wars, Passengers and many other iconic films, which I really enjoyed watching over the past years. After hearing the narrative aspect of the Joker Out’s new single - Vem Da Gres, I instantly knew which direction to take it.
The story is based on a young boy Maxx, who always dreamed to become an astronaut. Throughout his childhood, he met a girl named Luna, who turned to become his lifetime friend. They shared the same taste of music, they shared their secrets and mostly understood each other in a very priceless and pure way. They never showed any other interest, until the sudden moment, where Maxx faces his dreams : He was picked as one of the astronauts for the next space mission.
I wanted my story to focus on the quick rush of different emotions and flashback memories that are going through our main characters heads’ in the last days before their separation for some years.
INSIDE THE PROCESS
PRE-PRODUCTION
Since I was producing, directing and filming the project by myself, everything needed to be planned up ahead. I was planing the project over two months (December 2019 - February 2020). From location scouts to visualisations, set develepoments, designs and technical and crew requirements.
PRODUCTION
Production process took me 5-shooting days in February 2020. The shootings were planned out very well so everything went really smoothly with no surprises. I shot the whole thing on RED Scarlet-W using Canon EOS Cinema Primes. Big thanks go to the dedicated crew of production (Studio7), many supporters and sponsors of the project and last but not least, very talanted actors, who made this idea become a reality.
POST-PRODUCTION
The most difficult part of the whole process was for sure post-production. Not only because there was a lot of VFX needed to be done within a very short amount of time, but also because the band changed the whole mood of the song after we finished the edit a few days before release. Not only they decided to change one whole verse, the band also cut down the originally provided track for 30-seconds, which meant a lot for the narrative side of story.
STILLS GALLERY
Below I attached a few of many key visuals I had in mind for the sci-fi concept of the music video. I wanted to film it in a moody cinematic look using as little lights as possible due to limitations of the crew and buget. The overall look was developed in association with the post-production house NuFrame.
THE CREW
I really wanted to have a small but passionate crew on this project. I picked my standard Studio7 team with two additions, Jan Pirnat - a very creative photographer and Alena Milkovic - a wedding film videographer. Both are also a big inspiration for my work, that’s why I was really happy to have them with me on my passion project from the first steps of the project development. While Jan added his bits from a photographers’ point of view, Alena and her wedding situations all over the globe added extra creative way of thinking, especialy in edit.
There are obviously many people behind this project who I would like to thank, but surely I need to expose some of the key sponsors/partners of the project who made this thing happen. Miha Knific and Utopia Film for providing us the astronaut costumes, Center Noordung team for letting us use the Slovenian Space Center as one of the key locations for the film, Katarina Riznar and Studio Cepelin for the support with scenography and props, Pionirski Dom for making it legal to film the mask carnival, Mitja Bracic and Global Treatment Center for letting us use their facility and preparing astronouts for our mission and all the others who had the same vision and helped along the way.
